Den mystiske Kvinde (The Mysterious Lady)

The Danish artist Sven Brasch (1886-1970) created some of the best posters of the period 1910-1940 The site presents few examples, 17 only, of his art works for Hollywood movie posters, posters for events, magazine and book covers, ads from 1920's and 1930's and a self-portrait.

It was created by Peter Holst Eriksen, a collector of Sven Brasch's works as an attempt at introducing Brasch's unique and sophisticated universe and also to promote his book "Plakatens mester - tegneren Sven Brasch, which is probably very good. Few more and small images of Brasch's works here.

Meera (1979)

Almost a year ago I blogged about two galleries of posters at The hot spot: Hand Painted Horror Movie Posters of India & Pakistan and Bollywood Vintage Posters - Pre 1960's. Now it's time to explore the other galleries of Bollywood Vintage Posters: three galleries with posters from The 1960's, eleven from The 1970's, six with posters from the The 1980's and one more from The 90's and up.

Pantomimes lumineuses by Jules Chéret

One more stunning collection from The New York Public Library: Les maîtres de l'affiche. Les Maîtres de L'affiche (The posters) was a French "monthly publication with reproductions of the most beautiful illustrated posters of the great artists, French and foreign, published by L'Imprimerie Chaix", according with French text. It was published from 1896 to 1900, which means this collection, with 260 images, contains the best of Art Nouveau images. The posters are really marvellous. For me they are crème de la crème. Things to Come - La Vida Futura

Things to Come: A celebration of the 1936 film written by H.G. Wells, directed by William Cameron Menzies, and produced by Alexander Korda.Nice site with a great number of publicity materials of the film and pictures. (via IWR Art)

Things to Come is based on H. G. Wells' novel The Shape of Things to Come, published in 1933. A "web edition" of the book is available at The University of Adelaide Library, the film, in the public domain, is available to download at Internet Archive, and you can watch the film at Videos with Bibi.

There's something about a Jantzen

There are some crazy users on Flickr, and crazy means crazy in the best possible way, who like to share vintage images. Miss Magnolia Thunderpussy likes to share "some" stuff: almost six thousand of images divided in 90 sets and counting. It's a paradise of 1940s and 1950s pictures, navy images from around the world, WWII images, pulp book covers, posters and more memorabilia. Among all those cool stuff, here are a list of suggestions (according to the posts of this blog). (via PCL LinkDump)

- British Posters from the Second World War: A selection of posters issued by various Government and non-Government bodies during the Second World War.

- Der Landser: with four hundred pictures taking during the WWII. Der Landser" was the name given to the ordinary German soldier in the Wehrmacht, and was used during both World Wars. The term is no longer used for German soldiers.

- Fruit & Vegetable Crate Labels: more than three hundred Examples of classic designs from the USA, Canada, Spain and Australia. I love this ad.

- Now read on . . . : Book jacket art. A hilarious collection with several pulp book covers.

- Posters from Occupied Netherlands - World War II. A selection mainly of Nazi and pro-German posters.

Irish Beauty

- Robert Doisneau: 65 pictures of this master of photography. He dismiss presentations, but just in case Robert Doisneau was a French photographer noted for his frank and often humorous depictions of Parisian street life.

- The Accordion and its role in world peace: 51 pictures of accordion players. Probably just for enthusiasts.

- The Saturday Evening Post: 18 beautiful covers of that classic American magazine.

- Transport & Travel Posters: 259 images of ads, pamphlets and posters.

- US Navy posters: mainly recruiting posters from World Wars I and II.

- Variety, Vaudeville & Circus Acts: Vintage photographs of performers and acts - from variety shows, vaudeville and burlesque shows, and circuses.

- Vintage Advertisements: 149 images of vintage magazine ads, from costumes to food.

- Vintage Advertising Posters: with 72 very pretty images, many of them are also on the "Transport and Travel Posters" set. The collection contains one of those vintage disturbing ads.

- Waves & Navy Nurse Corps Recruiting Posters - World War II, with fourteen posters.

Cultural Revolution poster

Morning Sun: a film and a website about Cultural Revolution. A very interesting site with full of information of the Cultural Revolution and its changes in the Chinese culture, with articles, photographs, posters, paintings, artwork, artifacts, audio, badges, videos, suggestions of links and books.

A range of techniques and perspectives are used in the Morning Sun website to reflect on the origins and history of the Cultural Revolution (c.1964-1976). We approach the period not from a simplistic linear perspective, but from a panoptic one, encompassing a broad overview while allowing the user to focus in on individual histories, narratives and events that reveal the complex contradictory forces that led to an era of unrivalled revolutionary fervor and political turmoil.

Protecting their Daughter's Precious Sexual Purity

Ignore the ads, and enjoy these hilarious Christian Right Propaganda Posters: How the Christian Right Might Promote their Agenda, Beliefs, About site. Can you read the title without laughing at it? Sorry if I offend anyone, but I do have my own beliefs.

It's hard to believe that the discourse conveyed by those posters. Unfortunately the discourse sounds very close to what we hear, but they aren't real. They are created for satire reasons by Austin Cline, based on real propaganda posters. Please somebody buy a brain for the guys who really think like that. (via coisas do arco da velha)

Update: post re-written, because Tom McMahon pointed something I let it pass. Thanks Tom!

Paisà

The Flickr user Gerry D. is a film enthusiast and it seems he has special interest in the Italian cinema. What makes me think about are his Flickr sets. On his set Italian movies he shares 556 vintage images posters, publicity and ads for Italian films (until now). Even more impressive is his set Cinemas, theatres, auditoriums, concert halls with 716 images. He also has a set with 97 stills of Italian films and film people, among others. (via Hugo Strikes Back)

The poster above from one of the greatest Italian fims, Paisà, directed by the master Roberto Rossellini. Enjoy to watch Italian film on Videos with Bibi.

Aelita (1924)

The Fakeproject Corporation of America presents a selection of Soviet Movie Posters from 1921-1973. Posters aren't divided in categories or decades, as you mind expect. They all load in a single page, but it loads pretty fast. I'm never tired of saying how talented the Russians were (are?) in poster art. There are fabulous examples of artistic posters among the 194 posters available in a reasonable resolution. (via Plep)

PS.: the image above is the poster of the science fiction film Aelita, also known as Aelita: Queen of Mars, directed by Yakov Protazanov in 1924. Poster art by Izrail' Davidovich Bograd.

Calcutta (1947) by Josep Soligo

Javier Reguera, from the Spanish cultural blog asi se fundo carnaby street kindly uploaded 71 scanned images of Spanish movie posters, from 1920 to 1957 at Flickr. I have a good surprise with them: the graphics, with strong colours, detach the actors or a symbolic image of the film, make it even more attractive. The 1920's and 1930's posters remind me the aesthetic of the vintage Soviet posters from the me age.

Javier wrote about the posts on the blog: evolucion del cartel de cine en españa, 1920-1957 (Evolution of movie posters in Spain). He talks about some interesting things about the transition of posters design, from 1920's to 1930's, when the illustration won the detach, in the place of the excess written information, popular in the early cinema. He also says that, in the 1930's the posters were turned into essential ways of commercialization, rejecting the artistic aesthetic tendencies.

Der Weiße Teufel by Frank (1929)

If you are familiarized with the American posters of classic films, take a look on the Spanish versions and try to remember the known versions. Or compare the following examples with the original posters: Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder (original poster) , the Marx Brothers' A Night at the Opera (original poster), The Wizard of Oz (original poster), Charles Chaplin's The Kid (original poster), The Big Heat (original poster) and the German Fritz Lang's film Die Nibelungen: Kriemhilds Rache (Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge) (original poster). Excluding the Hitchcock's film, the Spanish versions look more dramatic and prettier to me. (via La Ventana Indiscreta)

Calendario escolar. CGT (2006)

The Spanish artist Manolo Sierra shows his talent in several ways: in paintings, murals, serigraphs, engravings and posters. According to ladrilio, this is probably his most known side, because his posters have a bit of everything: drawing, colours, message, compromise, sensibility and painting.

Manolo Sierra did more than two thousand posters, and to homage his excellent work, ladrilio and valladolid web musica created a virtual exhibition: Manuel Sierra, carteles 1974-2007. It presents 10% of his works, with significant selection, just with his posters created between 1974 and 2007. The site is part of the book El combate del Centauro, published by Mata Digital de Valladolid, presented during Fair Book of Valladolid, during the 2007 spring to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publisher, as the credits page says.

Mata Digital por Manolo Sierra

Exploring the site by area - art, events, advertising, associations and organizations, and posters of his own exhibitions - will give you a great perspective of his consistent work. The ladrilio has all the reasons to point to the colours, drawings and sensibility. His posters are cheerful and clearly pass their messages. And you know just a bit of Spanish, don't leave the site before read the insightful article of the professor Enrique Gavilán about Manolo Sierra.

Au Joyeux Moulin Rouge. Paris du Danse

Charles Michael Gallery has some nice works of art, including paintings and prints, and other objects. However, I'm much more interested in the vintage posters session. Divided in eight categories, from travel and transportation to sports, it's great collection with fine examples of French Art Nouveau posters and even 1940's American posters. The best of this collection is that, excluding few examples, I didn't know the posters. Delightful new posters to explore.

Among a poster for a soap called The Cat, a stunning poster for La Chablisienne, a cute one for 15e. Salon de L'Enfance Jeunesse Families and a scary poster for Onions, which made me very afraid to eat onions again, I had many doubts about what should I post. In the end I got a classic example of print by Alfred Choubrac to the cabaret Moulin Rouge. (via neurastenia)

L'amant sans visage

A marvellous on-line exhibition from Bibliothèwue du Film: Les affiches françaises du film noir américain (The French posters of American noir films). I would be happier with more images of posters. However, the images are nice, there is a resume and technical information of each film, a chronological filmography (from 1940 to 1959), and some interesting information about the posters, including the techniques used. BTW, the whole site is in French. (via Martin Klasch and josephzohn)

Congratulations, dear women! The Womens` Day

I would like to congratulate all the women for our International Women's Day. I won't write any manifesto or any protest about the injuries that we are still suffering, all the prejudice and violence that keep happening against us. I will do something I do much better to celebrate this important day: blog links about it.

- American Women!: A Celebration of Our History. The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum's exhibit to celebrate 106 female personalities have shaped our American experience

- A Petal from the Rose: Illustrations by Elizabeth Shippen Green. It's the first exhibition in decades to focus solely on Green's art, and this and the accompanying essay highlight distinctive features of her illustrations and working methods.

Aletha was not afraid of the old graveyard

- By Popular Demand: "Votes for Women" Suffrage Pictures, 1850-1920. A pretty nice collection of 38 pictures including portraits related to the campaign for woman suffrage in the United States. Also featured are photographs of suffrage parades, picketing suffragists, and an anti-suffrage display, as well as cartoons commenting on the movement - all evoking the visible and visual way in which the debate over women's suffrage was carried out.

- Classic Feminist Writings: the on-line archive contains classic feminist writings that helped define Second Wave feminism. (via Plep)

- Humor's Edge: Cartoons by Ann Telnaes. This exhibition celebrates Ann Telnaes's generous gift to the Library of Congress of eighty-one original drawings that represent the range of themes that engage this gifted artist who has recently emerged as a leader in American editorial cartooning.

- IdeaFixa, a Brazilian art e-magazine, homages the women's day in its fifth issue with the theme "woman". Highlights to the illustrations by Jonathan Weiner, the Jorge Bispo's portraits of men in wedding dresses, the collages by Kareem Risz and the social critic of Lauren Greenfield's pictures. In Portuguese and English, with NSFW images.

- Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture's Special Collection Library acquires, preserves and makes available to a large population of researchers published and unpublished materials that reflect the public and private lives of women, past and present.

- The Hannah Arendt Papers at the Library of Congress. The papers span the years 1898 to 1977, with the bulk of the material beginning in 1948, three years before Arendt’s naturalization as an American citizen. The collection is organized in the following series: Family Papers, Correspondence, Adolf Eichmann File, Subject File, Speeches and Writings File, Clippings, Addition I, Addition II, and Addition III.

- The Water-Babies: Illustrations by Jesse Willcox Smith. Her works evoking the innocence of youth and demonstrating the artistry of illustrated books are among the Library's great graphic treasures.

- The Zora Neale Hurston Plays present a selection of ten plays written by Hurston (1891-1960), author, anthropologist, and folklorist.

What the October Revolution has given to the worker and peasant women

The Museum of Russian Poster has an amazing on-line collection of images. There are almost two thousand of vintage and new posters, divided in seven categories: advertising, agitational, entertainment, military, movies, social and others. This is an excellent collection for its artistic and historical content. It's a incredible visual registry, since 1980's. It's one of those worth places to bookmark and visit from time to time.

The insurance society Russia. The insurance of passengers

More reasons to visit it: posters by Vladimir Vladimirovich Majakovskij , Alexander Mikhajlovich Rodchenko, Vladimir Avgustovich Stenberg and Georgij Avgustovich Stenberg. Looking at their posters you will notice how fresh and actual they look, even eight years after. They made part of a new "revolutionary" generation that helped to change a country, changing the graphic art and art itself.

The Cat and The Canary

The first time I heard the expression "Scream queen" was in the documentary about horror films history, 100 Years of Horror, hosted by Christopher Lee, which, by the way, I highly recommend. But what is a scream queen? It is an actress who has become associated with horror films, either through an appearance in a notable entry in the genre, as a frequent victim, or through constant appearances as the female protagonist. I also like to define them as "gorgeous women that are usually screaming in the films".

Now that you what it is, take a look at the fabulous Universal Scream Queens. It has a great list of actresses with many pictures and posters. Other option is search the actresses by film "categories": Dracula movies, Frankenteins series, The Mummy series, Werewolves, Phantoms, Ghouls & Ghosts, Mysteries and Mayhem, Mad Doctors, Sci-fi and others. Hotel For Women (1939)

From time to time Rashomon posts links to cinema posters sites. I save them and forgot to post after. Not it's time to post some of those cool stuff that he finds.

1920's 1930's Horror Sci-fi Lobby Cards is just a small part of the site, which contains a huge collection of reproductions of movie posters and lobby cards of vintage films. The bad part: there are just small images available. Take a look at the Serial Lobby Card Reproductions page too.

Exploitation Poster Art: This site is dedicated to the art of Exploitation film posters. It accompanies the release of Exploitation Poster Art in October 2005 by Tony Nourmand and Graham Marsh (Aurum Press). If you enjoying the pictures, buy the book: I have two of this collection of poster art and they are great.

Film Memorabilia: Lobby Cards - Mexico. All of the pieces in this section are original theatrical Mexican lobby cards. Three pages with several images and some information about them.

Hand Painted Horror Movie Posters of India & Pakistan: 25 precious images. I don't know what is more scary: the horror movies by themselves or those posters. Follow the links and take a look at the Bollywood Vintage Posters (Pre 1960's) too.

The Cinema of Ernst Lubitsch: Poster Gallery. Few images but with a good resolution. Enjoy and explore other pages of site: biography, links, filmography, timeline and potpouri.

Both of these men had syphilis

The fabulous collection of American Social Hygiene Posters (ca. 1910-1970) from the University of Minnesota has everything girls and boys need to know for a healthy sexual life (or maybe not):

The social hygiene movement of the early twentieth century combined moral indignation and public health methods in an attempt to combat prostitution and venereal disease. Especially during the two world wars, civilian and military authorities produced many posters to educate armed forces personnel on how to remain disease-free and “fit to fight.” The U.S. Public Health Service and the American Social Hygiene Association prepared elaborate poster displays during the 1920s as part of a campaign to eradicate what we now call sexually transmitted diseases.

Other way to browse the collection with 212 posters is using the search. One other preciosity displayed in the collection this poster:

Beware of chance acquaintances

"Pick-up" acquaintances often take girls autoriding, to cafés, and to theatres with the intention of leading them into sex relations. Disease or child-birth may follow.

Avoid the man who tries to take liberties with you. He is selfishly thoughtless and inconsiderate of you.

Believe no one who says it is necessary to indulge sex desire.

Know the men you associate with

Don't forget to read What sex brings to the girl and What sex brings to the boy. (via coisas do arco da velha)
