Pole Position by Guillaume Reymond

GAME OVER is a brilliant video performance project created by the Swiss artist Guillaume Reymond, using stop-motion (pixelation) technique to visually reproduce classic arcade games, pixel by pixel.

It consists of a series of collaborative animation movies which revive some of the very first video games. The pixels are replaced by a group of real human-beings that are moving from seat to seat in a theatre during about 4 to 6 hours. Each "pixel" has its own rules and decides what s/he wants to do for each picture. Once all these pictures are turned into a short animation movie, a giant human-scale video game unfolds "live".

The project started with video performance of Pong. The second video was Space Invaders on June 24th 2006, followed by Pole Position on February 11th 2007, and Tetris on November 24th 2007. The videos demanded a lot of time to be shoted, planned, and the result is great. However, two more reasons to watch them: the special effects and the soundtrack all made with voices only. Watch Tetris bellow.

The pretty humorous cards above are part of the deck of the French card game "La Grivoise" (The Spicy). That page contains all 32 cards and the box of the game released by Grimaud in the 1960's. According to the box, it's a funny game, for laugh and amuse yourself, with 16 blue cards for women, with answers, and 16 red cards for men, with questions. (via PCL)

Lock&chase

I'm old enough to remember the glorious days of arcade games like Frogger. But I noticed I did't have experience enough with "Fliperamas", the Portuguese word for arcade games, informally called "fliper". The only arcade game I remember playing was the classic Pinball. I'm saying this because the images displayed on The Control Panel Overlay Museum are totally unknown to me.

At least I know some of the games listed on the page by name, based on my brief experience playing video games: Asteroids, Elevator Action, Frogger, Ms. Pac Man, Pac Man, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong. Well, it's too late to complain now. (Thanks Bertrand!)

Atari - Pac-Man

I would like to have played more videogame in my childhood. Just a vaguely thought, based on my knowledge of the games of this set of Atari Game Manuals, with 103 images. I know several by the name, just by the name. I remember to play Astroblast, Asteroids, Pitfall!, Space Invaders and Pac-Man. That's all. The Atari wasn't mine and I wasn't able to finish any of those - I was a bad player. BTW, the worst Atari game ever is on too.

Pac-Man

Videogame Theater presents Pac Man - The Insatiable Hunger. A funny video using puppetry and animation, with Pac-Man as a junkie and wife-beater. Poor Ms Pac-Man. (I know this isn't new, but I found it now).

Frogger

I don't know why I post about things, but here it is Frogger in Flash. I didn't play Frogger when I was a little girl. I played Pac-Man, Mario Bros, Elevator Action and other games, always with my amazing technique that made me giving up of them The only game that I'm good playing is Tetris.

Some weeks ago I discovered that I'm a so good Frogger player as a Pac-man player. And that's the reason why I don't know why am I posting about this Frogger version in Flash. Anyway, the site Neave Games has more Flash versions of those 80's arcade and video games classics. There is Simon - I know how to play that, and I'm not so bad playing it -, Asteroids, Space Invaders and few others. (via digg)

Frogger

1980 games - Old online video and arcade games for free. Play Donkeykong Junior, Space Invaders, Ms Pacman, Elevator Action and many other video games from the 80's without spend any coin. I verified that I'm still playing those games as good as before, that's why Tetris still my favourite. The arcade games work with an emulator and they require Java.

Puck Man

The Video Game Revolution is a fascinating PBS site. The Video Game Revolution examines the evolution and history of the video game industry, from the 1950s through today, the impact of video games on society and culture, and the future of electronic gaming. The four areas - History of Gaming, Inside the Games, Impact of Games and The Arcade - tells the history of how they began, the first games, the best and the worst, how a game is made, it shows the classic games cheats and, through essays, it also shows how the games changed the habits of our society. In the end the quizzes test your memory and a flash version similar of Galaga. Don't miss the timeline.

Last month The Legend of Zelda celebrated its 20 Years. Two years ago a group of fans were already celebrating their love for the game doing a parody live action version of it. If the video isn't a masterpiece, at least it has some funny moments. I would like to see a Mario Bros live action version now. (via Backwards City)

Chuck Norris in: Attack of the Massacre Ninjas

I can't resist to silly flash games, it's stronger than me. When I see, I'm already playing them. But don't ask me why I have few posts about them here, even in the games category. Today I'm making one more addition to that poor list with Chuck Norris in Attack of the Massacre Ninjas. The graphics and the complexity aren't the best features of this game, however, it hs Chuck Norris and nijas, what else do you want? More Chuck Norris at Chuck Norris - Facts. The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda is celebrating 20 years. 1UP made a great special called Two Decades of Zelda - 20 years, 20 reasons Link still rocks.

Twenty years ago this week -- February 21, 1986 -- thousands of Japanese gamers played The Legend of Zelda for the first time, and their perspective on gaming was forever changed. Here was a huge world, a massive quest, an open-ended odyssey that demanded exploration. When we Americans first placed that golden cartridge in our Nintendo Entertainment Systems a few months later, we learned what our friends overseas had already discovered: Zelda was addictive. It was adventurous. It was ambitious. It was amazing.

I played it many years ago, more than a decade and I remember that I was very bad playing it - as usual - precisely so it was amusing. 4 color rebellion made a post about it, Happy 20th B-Day Link! with the line of the evolution of Link, while the official site, Zelda Universe, stay quiet about it. But I think that the best way to celebrate is playing it, no? (via /.)

Collection of dices

Worlds Largest Dice Collection: the story of Kevin Cook, that started to collect dices in 1977 and keep this obsession until now. In 2004 he receive the certificate of Guinness Record for the largest collection of dices: 11,097. Dices of plastic, amber, foam, glass, metal, paper, stone, wood, celluloid, bone, candy... with 4, 6, 8, 12, 20, 30... and 100 sides.

Search by theme, material or brandy, or look at How The Collection is Housed to see the boxes: the result and pretty and colourful. Imagine any kind of dice and this guy has. Maybe to all; he has naughty dices but doesn't have the two models below, not in a Portuguese version. (via Quiddity's)

Tetris is so damn cool that even with this 80's commercial it still a huge success. I'm happy that never had seen this video before started to play Tetris, but I'm trying to clean my mind of those bizarre associations. The video can be downloaded here. (via kottke)
