Without hope

Mia Mäkilä is a Swedish artist who creates dark and disturbing images, on in her words, horror art & collages. Her work has influences of Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the elder, Francisco de Goya, Johann Heinrich Fuseli, Frida Kahlo and René Magritte, David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, Michael Haneke, John Waters and Tim Burton, among others.

I paint my demons. I paint nightmares. To get rid of them. I paint my fears. I paint my sorrow. To deal with them. The motifs of my artworks are scary and macabre, but they also have a dark sense of humour. I love to use humour in a weird and strange way. You can see that in my artworks with the women who's shitting stars and fire. I call my artworks "neo-victorian horror art", because of the haunting quality from the victorian era I use in them. The style is nightmarish and dark, like a language of my inner demons and my sorrow. They are also inspired by the Lowbrow art movement.

She has a new blog The Wonderland of Mia Mäkilä, where she shares paintings, news, videos, curiosities and vintage things, in Swedish, By the way, the site and the blog are NSFW, but of course it depends of where you work. (via Hugo Strikes Back)

Purrr by Peter Clark

When someone makes a fabulous work, as Peter Clark does, even collages of dogs can get my attention. Peter uses a comprehensive collection of found papers as his palette which are coloured, patterned or textured by their printed, written or worn surfaces, with this media he 'paints' his collages.[...] His pieces use mark-making in an innovative and humorous way to create a collection of beasts and clothing which exude character and wit. Surmonter les obstacles

Gilbert Garcin: French photographer, French artist. Garcin born in La Ciotat in 1929 and lives in Marseille taking pictures, creating photo-montages, collages, art. His image in those pictures is a constant, as a picture, a shadow or a multiple of himself. He is the character that gives the motto to the pictures, while he plays with backgounds, textures, symbols, allegories and photo titles. (via PCL LinkDump)

Femme Fatales Collage

Art-e-zine: Welcome to artezine, this online zine is for everyone that's interested in playing and having fun with paper, paints, inks and stamps, and any other exciting mediums. Due to the huge number of pages, I suggest start exploring the site for the new stuff page. Other idea is explore all the links at contents - many of them go to external pages. And my last suggestion, if you are not in the mood for collage, but wants to see vintage images, go to the Vintage resources page.

Marcel Proust at the cabaret The Go More

The French artist Gerard Bertrand has a new series of collages about literature after L'Album de Franz Kafka. His new photomontages L'Album de Marcel Proust, as the title says is related to Proust's life and works. He says about the work of "recomposed photographs" : I tried, in this series to restore the spirit of this period of time as well as the spirit of the characters from "In Search of Lost Time - A la recherché du temps perdu". I associated those spirits to Proust, the narrator and the author. Very nice work with a vintage atmosphere.

Karl Waldmann

If you live at Bruxelles here is a good option of activity: go to the Galerie Pascal Polar and visit the current exhibition Karl Waldmann & Constructivisme Russe. This German artist made more than 900 works dating from 1915 to the 50’s, most of which are collages or photomontages.

His early pieces are abstract but soon after, his other works turn to echo constructivism, Dadaism and even surrealism.
The forms derived from constructivism, with a destruction of the classical image, VERB! in a dynamic vision. But the state of mind of the photomontages is close to the Dadaists by the will of integration of the social facts of his time in an acid and politic vision.

There is an online version of the exhibition here. More information about him can be found at Karl Waldmann Museum, including his works.

Paul Watson is a talented artist that makes nice assemblages, drawings, other mixed media artwork and texts. His latest work principia discordia is a limited series of 100 collages, each one hand-numbered, on 9 by 12 inches (229 x 305 mm) Bockingford Board and they are available to pre-order. Exoskeleton

Viktor Koen: paintings, digital collages, photomontage, prints and a great portfolio with many magazine covers.

Koen's creatures are created by manipulating vintage photographs, depicting upper-class males and fusing them with various monstrous or mechanical insects that bring to mind the surreal photomontages of Raoul Housman or Hannah Hoch from the 20's and 30's. The knowledge and application of these prototypes of mature modernism along with the use of contemporary scientific-mythology, render his work scholarly and multilayered.

His works resemble a kaleidoscope of color with swirling images cascading in all directions, defying gravity and challenging the viewer to make sense of this topsy-turvy world that his compositions evoke.

Tales

María Isabel Arango, graduated in Graphic Design, has a very nice work of digital and hand-made collage. With "innocence", "sketches", "tales", "marioneta real" and "stop killing animals" as subjects her work is inspired by the attitude of people with old style aesthetics. (via neurastenia)
