Quand les poules auront des dents

Quand les poules auront des dents is an insane and funny animation about what can happening when a chicken with teeth gets crazy in a small farm planet, by Julien Borde, Matthieu Cordenier and Henri Danjou. There is something in this animation that makes me remind of Le Petit Prince, probably the image of a very small planet, and, of course, it makes me remind of Chicken Run too. (via NicoSite)

Dan McCarthy

Skeletons can be very lovely, specially when they appear in pretty illustrations as Dan McCarthy makes. In his paintings, posters and drawings those skeletons appears as a symbol of the natural process of life, generating more life and love. (via benHayattayken)

The Way of Hope

The Way of Hope by Julien Dykmans: At the wheel of its caravan, Zebulon, a small travelling merchant, arrives in an old abandoned village. Feeling lonely, he tries to manufacture a companion. But things never happen as wished... The animation by Julien Dykmans was carried out during my last year of study in Character Animation.

Kroger Eggs

Nowadays, as a clear result of the huge competition among the companies and products, most of the commercials are made to sell ideas, a style of life. They made a commercial to sell not only a a pretty mobile with a pretty design, MP3 support and camera; they made it to you because the cool people, with an innovative style have it, and if you want to be like them you buy it. Maybe you are not the kind of people which is easy manipulated by the media, however you know that's how it works.

But the things were a bit different in the beginning. The commercials were made to show how good is that product, to show it works and how it's going to solve your problem - yes, this keeps happening in the ads. Many of them were a kind of manual to show a new product works - and this keep happening. They were much longer than the current ones, I mean really longer for us now.

And some strategies didn't change: the idea of create an empathy between the person or character that announced the product and the consumer was there since the beginning, but not so much glamorized as it happens now. The way that makes you memory a name by repetition or using a song was there. And specially a happy end: buy that product will make you happy or happier. And long life to capitalism! That's how it works.

All this was just an introduction to a selection of vintage television commercials available at Archive.org. This is just a small selection of all the material available there. I chose them to post some time ago, but the Official Google Video Blog was faster. Among the videos you are going to find vintage ads of Band-Aid, Chevrolet, cereals, Gillette, Coca-Cola, deodorant, Alka-Seltzer, cars, creams, tea and beer. One more reason to watch them: many of them are animations. Enjoy!

The Korean artist Kim Joon has superb work of body paint, and body paint in couples in his most recent works. Dragons, snakes, dogs, clouds, bubbles, flowers, commercial logos and Superman are part of the patterns used in his works. He uses the human body as a canvas for a brilliant 3D effect. Probably some of the images are NSFW. (via Blue Tea)

Staff Nurse Sally

Nurse Books: Career romances for young moderns... That is a great collection of book covers about nurses with 264 unique volumes. The titles aren't so funny as the usual pulp books, however the synopsis, like the one above for Strange Triangle, make them worth it:

Nurse Carol Bliss was finally going to marry the man she had loved for years, Dr. Mike Conway. On the eve of their wedding, an evil intruder threw their plans into chaos. Out of the past came Carol’s own sister, beautiful Nurse Beth, suddenly returning to reclaim Dr. Mike, her ex-husband. Greed drove Nurse Beth to infamous schemes. And Dr. Mike, in order to protect his child, fell prey to all these schemes. Can Dr. Mike and his beloved Carol, forced into a strange intrigue, come out with their love intact?

I'm sure I'm not the kind of girl that buy this kind of book to read. (via Rashomon)

1000 nudes

Two weeks ago I was a naughty girl and bought a lovely book called 1000 Nudes - A History of Erotic Photography from 1839-1939. It was love at first sight: I look at "him" and I knew that we belong to each other. Actually, before that I knew about "him": 1000 Nudes is a TASCHEN re-edition to celebrate the 25 years of this publisher. The book was out-of-print, so when I saw the new edition I wouldn't able to resist.

This book offers a cross-section of the history of nude photography, ranging from the earliest nude daguerrotypes and ethnographic nude photographs to experimental nude photography. All the pictures shown are taken from the late Uwe Scheid’s collection, which was one of the world’s largest and most important collections of erotic photography.

If you like of vintage photography or nude pictures this book is highly recommended. The edition is beautiful, as all the TASCHEN books, with an introduction in 3 languages (German, English and French). Lovely! And the price was great for a photography book. How could I leave "him" there?

Ok, maybe you liked of my suggestion, but now you are broke. There is an alternative, the site 1000 Nudes. Well, it seems that someone scanned the first edition of the book and put it available. It's not the same thing as the book, but still an excellent collection of pictures. My suggestion is start by the last two chapters: New trends in nude photography and Glamour shots and pin-up girls, with pictures by André Kertész, Man Ray and others. After this first exploration go to Pictorialism: painterly nudes and all the other chapters, if you have a lot of time. BTW, almost all the pictures are NSFW. (via Foire à tout)

Madame Buccaneer

Maybe some of you missed my posts about pulp books, that's why I'm going to fix this with Pirates, Buccaneers & Privateers - An English Graphical Bibliography. A nice selection of pulp paperbacks only with pirates. And for more stuff about pirates check the other links of Piratical and Privateering Books in English, with links to magazines, penny dreadfuls, stamps, comics and much more. It's a fantastic site for vintage images with pirates. (via Quiddity)

Digital Funnies: Comics Preservation by Jonathan Barli.

Digital Funnies, dedicated to preserving the history of this most neglected of art forms and reintroducing it to scholars and new readers alike. While several well-known titles such as Krazy Kat, Gasoline Alley, and Peanuts are being given their proper due in published form, there is still much of the rich history of comics and cartooning that will more than likely never see print again and worse, fade away with time.

50 Coolest Websites

Time presents its 2006 selection of the 50 Coolest Websites. The sites were divided in 7 areas, however my interest went only to Entertainment, Arts and Media session. As usually I don't agree with most of their choices, except Drawn, their best choice in my humble opinion. Other good choice was Pandora, which one my boyfriend loves. I prefer Last.fm just because I don't like to open one more tab and it's easier use the Last.fm software.

I must say one more thing about the sites listed there: YouTube. If you just go watch funny videos there it's great, if you have an account and just upload you home-made videos, it rocks, but if you are a hard user, if you upload videos in public domain it sucks.

Well, I could give more examples of angry users that had problems with You Tube and no answers. First example: me. They deleted my first account, ok I survive. But now I stopped to upload videos in the new account, because they made 2 mistakes and didn't corrected them. The first one was say that two videos that were in public domain weren't. They said sorry and that they weren't put the videos back. They didn't do. Second: more two videos wrongly accuse that aren't be in public domain, that someone flagged. Curiously in all the other places that I search, including databases of films in public domain, they were in public domain, so I sent one more email. No answers. More two emails: no answers.

So, after those emails, no answers and with the threat of have my account suspended in case that I upload more "copyrighted material", what I didn't do in both cases, I stopped to add any material there. And I'm not the only one which had a problem with them and I won't be the last one. Am I look furious? It's because I'm.

There were other cases, like the posts of Cartoon Brew, The Shelf and Llámame Lola. Here is my advice: do you just want to watch cool stuff? Fine, use YouTube, or any other site of video storage. Do you want to upload a video? Use Google Video, Dailymotion, Veoh or any other, but don't use YouTube. That's all I have to say, sorry for the relief.

Back to the TIME site, read also 25 Sites We Can't Live Without, a cool article with good tips of sites, specially if you are American.

Pokemon and Hitchcock

Are you tired of sites and blogs with photos of tiny/cute/adorable animals? Not yet? Wait, there is a new one: The Cute Project - Collecting the World's Cuteness! On the contrary of the other cute sites, this one is a social software. That means that its content is created by the admins and the users. Updated daily, the goal is not only to develop an ever growing collection of overwhelmingly cute art, but to build a community of people (Cutizens!) who appreciate and love to share their captured cuteness.

Anyone can registry there and contribute submitting your own cute stuff: photos, games, videos, art or sites that you know. My favourite is part is that everything submitted there receives the credit, including the link to the original image or video. I already made three contributions to the site, so why don't to you that too?

Raiders Of The Lost Ark re-enacted by bunnies

In the last weeks the Bunnies starred, re-enacted, two new parody productions: Office Space and Raiders Of The Lost Ark. BTW, Office Space Bunnies contains bunnies in adult situations. What kind of advised is that? Anyway, watch those very funny 30 seconds animations.

Jules Verne

Before Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein and even before H. G. Wells there was Jules Verne. The French writer was a pioneer of the science-fiction genre. Verne was noted for writing about cosmic, atmospheric, and underwater travel before air travel and submarines were commonplace and before practical means of space travel had been devised. His creations belong to our imaginary, to our culture.

Les voyages extraordinaires His novels were immortalized through the years by tons of film adaptations. The first of them was probably the renowned Le Voyage dans la Lune, directed by Georges Méliès, in 1902. The short film was based on Verne's novel De la Terre à la Lune. The Méliès' film is available at Internet Archive to download and Google Video to watch.

Verne is the third most translated novelist in the world. The fact that his work is in public domain of course contribute to that, but even before, his books had became classics of the universal literature. For those that want to start to explore his fantastic universe in the original language, La bibliothèque Jules Verne is my suggestion. (via La Bibliothèque électronique du Québec)

I also recommend the always great Project Gutenberg if you are planning to download or even read on-line the works of Verne. There are available versions of his books in French, English and Dutch. Fourteen of the English versions have also audio books. If that wasn't enough just follow the links at Wikipedia article about him.

Heidi Van Horne

I'm totally against wars and most of the army actions, however the Pinups for Troops has pretty pictures of pin-ups, so I couldn't resist to post it. The nice collection of pictures, by pin-ups and photographers, is a preview of the book with the same name. (via Pez)

Weidenhoff

Lockwasher Design - custom engineered found objects. Rayguns, rockets and robots with a retro style for big kids that love sci-fi toys. I bet you can imagine some of them in a 1950's sci-fi film. (via Popgadget)

From The Observer Websites that changed the world:

This month the web is 15 years old and in that short time it has revolutionised the way we live, from shopping to booking flights, writing blogs to listening to music. Here, the Observer's Net specialist charts the web's remarkable early life and we tell the story of the 15 most influential websites to date.

The list starts with eBay and finishes with easyjet.com a budget airline company. Those wouldn't be my choices, but I agree with other of them, including Napster, Slashdot, Google, Amazon and specially Wikipedia. And you, do you agree with that list? Any suggestions? (via /.)

Gum Drops

Candy you ate as a kid is the new project of coverpop, this time dedicated to the candies. All the candies are from Old Fashioned Candy, a on-line that still selling candies that you eat in the 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s.
