M - Fritz Lang

Stupendous! I was waiting for this link to work, and now there it is: M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder on the Internet Archive! Yes, the Fritz Lang's masterpiece with the fantastic Peter Lorre! If you've never watched the film be sure to check beforehand some information about it on IMDb and the history of what was happening on those years in Germany. And don't forget that Scarlet Street is available over there, too.

Cornucopia Nut Cup

I'm not American, but I'm a polite girl (most of the time) and need/ want to wish happy Thanksgiving to my readers. So:

Happy Thanksgiving

I have some links about it too people that know what it is, for people that don't know and for people that like links:

- Abbott & Costello's Formal Thanksgiving provided by Radio Memories Network.

- Cute Thanksgiving paper crafts: Thanksgiving card, napkin rings, cornucopia nut cup, a bonbon box and The Mayflower.

- Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Flickr (via Flickr Blog)

- Memories Can't Wait selection of a few tunes in the spirit of the day.

- NYPL images of thanksgiving (because NYPL rocks!). There are many Thanksgiving ragamuffins pictures, cards, menus, Hymn of Thanksgiving, postcards and magazine covers.

- Thanksgiving Turkey Optical Illusion: an inventive cooking technique to use with the turkey.

- Turkey Facts: a big list of turkeys facts by i-pets.com blog.

- Turkey Fryers are a Huge Fire Hazard A good film to watch BEFORE you bust out that turkey deep fryer. I hope that some people leave the poor turkey alone, after saw that. (via MetaFilter)

- Two of the many Slashfood articles about thanksgiving: A Bad Bird (about the turkey) and Thanksgiving safety warnings

- WFMU's Beware of the Blog has two links to A Thanksgiving Prayer from William S. Burroughs. "Thanksgiving Prayer" is a poem first included in the chapbook Tornado Alley. Director Gus Van Sant then put together this montage whose power derives almost solely from William S Burroughs' reading and, perhaps, the strange sad-old-man expression of his staring eyes at the end. You can watch also on Devil Ducky and here.

- Wikipedia Thanksgiving article.

Where is the Google Thanksgiving logo? Well, this year they didn't do it, but you can check the thanksgiving logos made on 1999, 2000 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

thanksgiving00_logo.gif

Update: There is a Google logo for Thanksgiving here but I don't know I didn't see it. I also lost the Gmail logo, because I'm using the French version of it (to practice).

Something that I would like to my grandma for Christmas: Skeptic's Annotated Bible. Unfortunately it isn't available in book form. Precisely so I want to show to her the great work of annotation made on the Old and New Testament. The notes are about injustice, absurdity, cruelty, violence, contradictions (my favourite notes, family values, women, good stuff, science, history, prophecy, sex, language, interpretation, homosexuality and intolerance that you can find on the Bible.

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible attempts to remedy this imbalance. It includes the entire text of the King James Version of the Bible, but without the pro-Bible propaganda. Instead, passages are highlighted that are an embarrassment to the Bible-believer, and the parts of the Bible that are never read in any Church, Bible study group, or Sunday School class are emphasized. For it is these passages that test the claims of the Bible-believer. The contradictions and false prophecies show that the Bible is not inerrant; the cruelties, injustices, and insults to women, that it is neither good nor just.
The SAB will help those who believe in the Bible to honestly reconsider that belief. It will help those who are unfamiliar with the Bible to resist the temptation to believe. And it will help those who have already rejected the Bible defend their position.

It is available as CD including the Skeptic's Annotated Book of Mormon and Skeptic's Annotated Quran. The site has a link to a The PalmSAB, but the links isn't working now. (Thanks André!)

Einstein the Parrot

If you know me you know that I love to make sound effects while I'm talking. But Einstein the Parrot is much better than me, to make those sounds. The grey lady, it's a female parrot, is amazing. But I'm still against training animals to entertainment. Pay attention to the evil laugh, one one more favourites sounds to reproduce. You can watch the video here too. (via Milk and Cookies)

Portable book

Hand Bookbindings: Plain and Simple to Grand and Glorious. The on-line display of that Princeton University’s Firestone Library exhibition of over two hundred bindings, divided thematically into twenty-six categories. While conventional wisdom holds that books cannot be judged by their covers, visitors had a chance to do just that from the most humble of volumes to the most luxurious; from the monastic manuscripts of the twelfth century to the special editions of the twentieth. I chose the image of that curious portable book, used in the late Middle Ages, but the prettiest covers are on Embroidered Bindings pages.

Elephant

Matt Can Draw. Well, his colourful (and with a lot of humour) illustrations shows that he really can. Matthew J. Luxich started drawing cartoon characters on the walls all throughout the house, before go to study illustration and animation. His portfolio has works of illustration, drawing and design works.

Farfafouille

Blanc Foncé - Benjamin Carre's Art Pages. Most of illustrations have a dark atmosphere, sometimes a sci-fi themes, with a dramatic style, like some comics. There isn't a lot of information about him, but I think that his illustrations reflect the experience working with videogames.

Jane Birkin

This is not a post about Cukor's film Les Girls; it's a post to introduce you to a few blogs that I like a lot, where you can find girls singing in French.

Blowupdoll was the first audio blog that I visited. And thanks to Mordi that posts songs of "dolls", as he calls the lovely singers, I discovered many great French singers. The French dolls aren't so frequently on his wonderful blog, but there isn't a single reason not to put him on your favourites list.

Filles Sourires - Girls. Singing In French. Making Me Sigh. Any questions? A man with a suggestive nick of Guuzbourg shows the singers that he appreciates with a brief presentations and files to listen. I have to say that Filles Sourires is now my favourite audio blog and I'm addicted to French songs, specially those sung by girls.

Oh-la-la is not a blog, and I talked about it some time ago. It's an on-line radio with French music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Of course they have French women singing. New music is added every week, so from time to time, just go visit it.

Rato Records Blog. The focus of this blog is vintage songs and occasionally there are posts with French singers. Check all hist posts with the name" Nostalgia" - you can find on those compilations many a lot of French music.

Spiked Candy. I'm not sure of the blog's theme, but there are a lot of songs in French and girls singing. I didn't find any feed to sign, but to keep me updated of the fantastic selection of the songs posted I signed the mailing list. One of my favourite posts is euro-madness with the beautiful song "L'Amour Est Bleu" by Vicky Leandros.

I have a contribution too, with six of my favourite French singers. If you like the songs you can buy the CDs on Amazon. And here is my selection:

Carla Bruni - Quelqu'un M'a Dit or here (buy the CD)

Clarika & Bernard Lavilliers - Non Ça S'peut Pas (buy the CD)

Eartha Kitt - Je Cherche Un Homme or here (buy the CD)

Edith Piaf - Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien or here (buy the CD or buy The Dreamers soundtrack)

Mylène Farmer - Q.i or here (buy the CD)

Sandrine Kiberlain - Manquait Plus Qu`ça (buy the CD)

What_Barry_Says.jpg

What Barry Says: an animated short film directed by Simon Robson produced by Knife Party, where you can find more information about it . What Barry Says is very much a response to Simon witnessing his peers apparent lack of interest in the anti-war marches between the attack on Afghanistan and the second Golf War. Many young Londoners seemed to feel that they could do nothing to stop the attack on Iraq, so why bother. You can watch also on AtomFilms or on Wimp. (via MetaFilter)

Maligore

The Extensive Power Rangers Monster Guide a list of every monster, mutant, villain, and toady ever seen on Power Rangers, organized by year and by appearance and then a MASSIVE LIST of all of them alphabetically. Dennis Kunkel Microscopy, Inc. Science and Photography Through the Microscope. A web site devoted to microscopy science education with pictures of algae, arachnids, bacteria, crystals, fungi, insects, plants, virus, medical protozoa, miscellanea of invertebrates and vertebrates. Maybe this is a kind of geek entertainment, but if you take a look on the beautiful pictures of crystals will you see that they look like art, abstract art.

The Thomas Crown Affair

Sorry I didn't post this before, but I sleep on weekends. Anyway, don't wast more time: go to Flickhead post Faye’s mouth to donwload and enjoy the great soundtrack of the classic The Thomas Crown Affair, originaly composed by Michel Legrand. Just in case, if you don't know, this is from the 1968 version, the original version with Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen.

Also check out: The Thomas Crown Affair poster gallery.

El Macho

This is related with my last post, but I thought that the terrific work of Jorge R. Gutierrez deserved his own post. His colourful portfolio, that can be checked out on Super-Macho, with paintings, illustrations and animations is mainly based on the universe of Mexican lucha libre. Make a tour for all the pages, specially Character Design, Personal Work, Commissioned Work and El Macho - to watch the amusing flash animations.

La Arena is the largest lucha libre wrestler database in the world (and not just the internet) since late 1997. It is a space where you can find information about many of the most important figures in the history of Mexican wrestling, as well as many past and current stars, both on the national and minor league scene.

Pantera - Metal Magic

The Worst Record Covers of All Time from Pitchfork Features, by Brent DiCrescenzo. I don't think that those covers are too bad, I saw a lot of worse things on my list of sites with bad covers and I like a lot the Genesis covers from 70's, with that nonsense visual. (Thanks João!)

TV Set 1952 - papercraft

I found on The World of Discovery from Panasonic a five adorable paper craft PDF models of vintage electrical / household appliances. You can make a small replica of a 1959' automatic rice cooker, a 1931' radio, a 1952' TV Set, a refrigerator from 1954 and a washing machine made on the year after. They have also two models of the character of National company and of two pop-up cards, fireworks and a coral with fishes.

From Devil Ducky a short funny/silly video viral for some convenience store: Tasty Fingers.

Google Notícias Brasil

Yesterday news from Google: Google News Brasil and Google Book Search. Then, the new name of Google Print is Google Book Search. Here is one reason why the changed the name:

When we launched Google Print, our goal was to make it easier for users to discover books. Now that we're starting to achieve that, we think a more descriptive name will help clarify what our users can do with it: namely, search the full text of books to find ones that interest them and learn where to buy or borrow them.

About Google News Brasil, it seems that works fine. It has the most popular journals and sites of news and works as the same way as the English version. But I don't know if the Google News Portugal is also very good to check the latest news. (via Official Google Blog)
