Sorry, people,

I'm still having problems with MT. I am correcting the character encoding and to do that, I have to re-edit the entries. If you were pinged again, that was the reason. Also, the process of rebuilding entries take a long time and a lot of CPU: less than before I disabled category archive updates, but still too much.

Let's see if the boyfriend can fix that.

People_of_the_Century.jpg

From the TIME Magazine: TIME 100 - People of the Century. One century, 100 remarkable people, TIME has profiled those individuals who - for better or worse - most influenced the last 100 years. They are considered in five fields of endeavor, culminating with Person of the Century: Albert Einstein. I'm glad to they put Igor Stravinsky on that list with and article by Philip Glass.

Camouflage Comics - Dirty War Images aims at producing reflections - both in the form of verbal and visual material - on the interplay between art, dictatorship and human rights in general and the legacy of the Argentine "Dirty War" (1976-83) in particular, with a focus on comics. Don't forget to check the beautiful images of Christian Montenegro Why mice hate cats and dogs and the history of the Dirty War if you don't know it. (via MetaFilter)

Radio Memories

Radio Memories Podcast has five radio episodes for fans of horror in MP3 format. Do you prefer suspense? Ok, they have suspense episodes too and much more interesting radio episodes, just take a look there. Visit also Radio Memories Network.

Cute Bento

Sushi Pictures is one more of those sites that I had to post before. The page doesn't have pictures of sushi as the title says, but pictures of bento boxes with smiley food. Those how know Japanese can reproduce the recipes using the suggest ingredients. I think that probably that cute food is a good trick of moms to make the kids eat all. (via Slashfood)

Kitty and Fishes

Warning: if you don't like cats or cute illustrations leave this post now. Now back to the post. The Japanese artist Makoto Muramatsu makes super cute images of cats (many kitties) and other animals with a lovely and silly expression. His works are so sweet that you have to be careful. More of his kawaii illustrations here.

Valentines Book of Styles

There is a Brazilian furniture store called Tok & Stok that sells products with a clean and nice design. Matt Hutson points to a web interface that they developed called Valentines Book of Styles. Probably they made for our Valentine's day (12 of June) because I couldn't find it on the store site. The interface shows the other uses for furniture: have sex. The client choose the item and check the "Suggestions of use".

The Kama Sutra positions suggested are classic, but if you think that they are boring click on "my own style" to create one. There you can use your creativity to try bizarre, difficult or impossible positions without hurting your partner, or just check if your favourite will work with that piece of furniture. There is only one problem, and Matt talked about it too: it is an heterosexual interface. Well, the idea is funny anyway. (via apophenia)

PS.: alguém sabe me dizer se eles tinham essa interface no dia dos namorados lá no site? Viram alguma coisa sobre isso?

When I make posts with related with war I hope that people remember how many atrocities were made in the name of wars, by politics, religion or revenge. I'm against wars, I hate them. Millions of unknown innocents died in wars and, of course, famous people that fight for their ideals. On the Spanish Civil War the first name that I remember is Federico García Lorca, a great writer, whose works I appreciate a lot, specially his poetry books. He was murdered by Nationalist partisans at the age of 38 at the beginning of that war. He is also remembered as a painter, pianist, and composer.

In war times art still be produced, most of the times for propaganda of the both sides. I think that is very important preserve those materials 'cause they are the registry of art, culture, history, society of some era, they keep the memory of other times alive and are the documents of how people can be manipulated by images and texts. When you work with images you start to discern the other meanings implicit on them. The propaganda and advertisement are very good to manipulate images, distort the reality or create another one.

Propaganda posters are always a great example of how to sell an idea using an images, words, colours and design (the position of each icon is very important). El Burlador posted two links with collections of posters from the Spanish Civil War: Carteles de la Guerra Civil and Carteles GCE.

At the UCSD Mandeville Special Collections Library has Southworth Spanish Civil War collection with 3 fantastic sessions. They Still Draw Pictures - A collection of over 600 drawings made during the Spanish Civil War by Spanish children both in Spain and in refugee centers in France; Shots of War: Photojournalism During the Spanish Civil War; and The Visual Front - Posters of the Spanish Civil War, an excellent exhibition. Plus: Spanish Civil War: Dreams and Nightmares, with extracts from some interviews with International Brigade veterans.

Update: Roberto suggested on more link, Himnos y Canciones de la Guerra Civil - hymns and songs from the Spanish Civil War as MP3.

Now I am having problems with the accents on some old posts in my blog. Since I have a lot of entries and I have to fix them one by one I am going to have a lot of work. I am a list crestfallen, but I won't stop blogging. Thank you for your support, your messages, and your visits.

I intended to thank to some people for their very kind posts last friday, but I couldn't, because of the problems here. I'm doing that now, late, but still moved by their gentle words. My thanks to Billy, Ana Lúcia, Anaid the Rabbit and Idelber for the posts A Curious Girl, Cabinet de curiosités e Cinematógrafo and different kind of worlds and Links e Dicas.

September 23, 2005

Sorry. I'm having dificulties with the category archives. As their sizes were getting larger, it started to take longer and longer to rebuild them (O(n), it seems) and the CPU usage went through the roof. Today it became too much and I stopped being able to post, that is why I didn't post the things that I wanted too. today

To allow me to keep on posting, I have disabled the rebuilding of the category archives, and new individual entries will no longer have clickable category links. I hope to have this problem solved soon and you will once again be able to browse by category. Hopefully, those archives will even be paged into small manageable chunks. One can hope...

We will be back to our usual programming after I calm down a little.

Update: It happens I made a mistake on the link to the category archive.

Update: I was not getting comments, either. Everything should be working now, except for the freak character encoding problems. If they are not, please e-mail me.

I love when chocolate chip cookies follow me

At first the name of this post was Please Cynical-C go to hell, but I have already had two boxes of cookies since the last time that Chris, from Cynical-C Blog, eat some delicious chocolate cookies. So now I'm feeling better (and fatter) and decided to change the name of it. Here are some links about the cookies, not that cookies, 'cause I was inspired to research them.

Alien selling cookies: the cartoon name says everything.

American Cookie Jar Association: ugly jar contest, some information, articles and some links (many for online stores). I liked the collection of this shop.

Boston Cookies: We specialize in fine baked goods made without eggs, dairy or preservatives. Hum... thanks, but since I'm not vegan I prefer my cookies with eggs

Cookie is a small, flat baked cake (Commonwealth English biscuit). Its name comes from the Dutch word koekje which means "little cake", probably via Lallans. The Wikipedia article.

Cookie Blues: funny video with cookies playing blues (or try this link).

Cookie Monster - article about the blue furry Muppet monster that is crazy for cookies and has a voracious appetite.

Cookie Recipes: tons of cookies recipes, tips, hints and ideas.

Flickr: Photos tagged with cookies; Biscuits & Cookies group; and Everybody loves Cookies! another group.

History of Cookies The earliest cookie-style cakes are thought to date back to 7th century Persia A.D. (now Iran), one of the first countries to cultivate sugar (luxurious cakes and pastries in large and small versions were well known in the Persian empire). It's interesting know those things. The page has more information about the cookies history.

Mesquite Chocolate Chip Cookies: oh my... this recipe seems to be very good and the picture is almost indecent... porn food!

PS.: Cooking for Engineers has always cool recipes explanations, but the site is down (Bandwidth Limit Exceeded). Maybe later or try google cache without the images.

Fish

The awesome portfolio of Tim Flach has pictures of horses, bats, animals, animals & people, Africa, bodies and babies. Catchy colours, great close-ups and details.

Ballet Mécanique

Good news from The Crime in your Coffee: the Film session of UbuWeb is back! Super! So don't waste more time and start downloading / watch some classics from surrealism, among other cool films. I will start with my favourites: the silent films directed by Joris Ivens, René Clair, Luis Buñuel, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Fernand Léger and Dziga Vertov.

PS.: the first version of Le Chien Andalou, the 322.9 mb (AVI) version, has the film Las Hurdes included.

Hase - Coelhinho!

The Viennese artists from the group Gelitin An enormous pink bunny has been erected on an Italian mountainside where it will stay for the next 20 years. Bunny images here.

The things one finds wandering in a landscape: familiar things and utterly unknown, like a flower one has never seen before, or, as Columbus discovered, an inexplicable continent; and then, behind a hill, as if knitted by giant grandmothers, lies this vast rabbit, to make you feel as small as a daisy.
[...] Happily in love you step down the decaying corpse, through the wound, now small like a maggot, over woolen kidney and bowel. Happy you leave like the larva that gets its wings from an innocent carcass at the roadside. Such is the happiness which made this rabbit. I love the rabbit the rabbit loves me.

I almost said "oh, so cute", but it's too big to say that. (via wmmna)

Fremont Street

For people that like the kitsch stuff: Vintage Vegas - casino collectibles (chip art and casino chips), matchbook lounge and postcard museum.

Has there ever been a city that looked better on a postcard than Las Vegas? The buildings, the signs, the neon lights... visual excitement captured on a simple little card. Hotels gave them away, souvenir shops sold them for a few cents. Yet they're priceless for the memories they bring. Here at Vintage Vegas, we're always striving to keep the history of Las Vegas alive.

BTW, Cynical-C posted about the postcard session before.

PS.: Não é porque eu postei sobre Las Vegas que eu aprovo os bingos daqui, pelo contrário continuo detestando todo e qualquer bingo daqui de São Paulo.

Cidres de Normandie

Vintage Posters and Original Posters by Nancy Steinbock from the 1880's to 1950's. There are many beautiful images, but I couldn't resist and again chose an Art Nouveau poster, well, I love that style. (via neurastenia)

Trixie and Captain Cuddlepuss

Why did I never blog about Creature Comforts? Good question. If you appreciate the claymation you probably saw that wonderful short-film conceived which animals discuss life at the zoo, directed by Nick Park and produced by Aardman Animations. If you didn't, watch it on AtomFilms (try QuickTime format if you use Firefox) or try this link.

The original film's dialogue was created by interviewing residents of a housing development with shut-ins and zoo attendees. Claymation animation was then created that attributed the answers to zoo animals. The leopard speech is the best part of the video, hilarious indeed, and his voice is from a Brazilian friend of director Nick Park's who hated England.

In 2003 Creature Comforts became a TV series in the same style, but unfortunately I never saw an episode. You will find many cool things on the TV series site, including some video excerpts and information about the production. Aardman also helped promote the Countryside Code using all new Creature Comforts characters and countryside sets of moorland, coast and farmland. The lovely characters are all over the site and there is the promotional video too.

PS.: just in case, if you want to know, my accent is much better than the leopard's accent.

Berlin Bunny

I knew that you could find Animals on the underground but animals on the subways of Germany it's new for me. Zoobahnplan shows what animals are on the subways of Berlin, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Köln, Leipzig and München. (via Candy shop)

PS.: does anybody know if someone made this with the subway of Paris? Maybe the subways of Russia? Other city or country?
