Top 10 downloads of the past 10 years: When CNET Download.com opened its doors in 1996, it was home to 3,000 small shareware and freeware applications. Online software distribution was still in its infancy. The 10 applications best represent the top trends in downloading over the past decade are: ICQ, Winamp, Napster, Firefox, Winzip, iTunes, Ad-aware, Skype, RealPlayer and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Curiously I used almost all, some because I don't have another choice, but it seems a good list. (via Spread Firefox)

Comments

The list must be doctored somewhat because the spyware-laden Kazaa was top on the list for quite a while. (CNET just dropped these products.)

I tend to prefer winamp over Real because it's a little less prone to phoning home and obnoxious upselling. however, I've heard that if you download real player via the link on teh BBC site, then say you're in the UK, it disables some/most of this stuff.

I don't like Real. I just use it because some sites just work with it. :(

Hum... interesting tip... I will try it. Thanks Jim! :)
